As with his previous novels, Gandt did the research for Black Star Rising on location. The novel is set in Southeast Asia - Vietnam, Hong Kong, and the South China Sea - where the author traveled extensively in the spring of 2005.

As the story opens, China is expanding its industrial might, becoming the second largest consumer of oil in the world. And the only thing blocking China's access to the huge oil reserves in the South China Sea is the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. When a Vietnamese oil rig is destroyed, China is obviously the culprit. The U.S., joined in a defense pact with Vietnam, calls upon Commander Brick Maxwell to fly the hyper-advanced Black Star stealth jet against the Chinese.

But the Chinese have technology that is a match for the Black Star. And an old adversary of Brick's is hunting him with a vengeance.

In this follow-up to "The Killing Sky," fighter pilot Brick Maxwell takes command of the ultimate flying weapon and lands in the front lines of America's newest war in this sixth novel of Gandt's action-packed series.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT
BLACK STAR RISING

"Gandt, a former Navy fighter pilot and author, as we've often said, of some of the best in fiction and non-fiction aviation writing, has just about perfected the art of involving the reader in his dramatic and adventurous tales of Navy fighter pilots.

"We're running out of adjectives to decribe his well-written, authoritative, exciting and extremely involving adventure tales, complete with air, land, and sea battles, aerial dogfights, Navy SEALS, submarine warfare, and even an attack on a carrier battle group."
Wayman Dunlap
editor, Pacific Flyer,  February 2007

"Brick Maxwell, a naval aviator for all seasons, is back again in Robert Gandt's sixth novel, Black Star Rising, which is, as usual, timely, authentic, and reeks of "Blue and Gold.

"Black Star Rising reveals insights into the incredibly fast-paced and intricate operation of an aircraft carrier and its strike force, while Gandt handles nicely a number of very realistic naval "Airedales" of both genders."
Daytona Beach News Journal, 21 January, 2007

Sit down and shut up as Gandt stuffs us into the seat of the military's finest aerial hardware. This time it is the secret stealth jet - Black Star. The flying sequences are top notch. Even if you are not a shithot Navy pilot, Gandt knows how to draw the reader into the cockpit in a very visceral way. I even find myself grunting on the cat launches! It is precisely why I love his writing. The author has obviously "been there and done that". The plot line has the typical good guy, bad guy sequence and obligatory love interest. Brick Maxwell is the James Bond/Robert Gandt of the U.S. Navy. Good stuff!

Bob Gandt's Brick Maxwell series is probably the most authentic naval aviation fiction being produced today. You even vicariously pull several "G's" as Brick's plane gets flung off the carrier's catapult or tries to roll inside his opponent -- it's that authentic. Gandt has a unique way of explaining the obscure naval term or aviator's jargon that keeps you feeling "with it" while not interfering in the slightest with the continuity of the plot. Gandt's knowledge of contemporaneous world events and his continuous exposure to naval carrier operations help greatly in lending contemporaneous authenticity to each of his novels. Try his works -- you'll love them!

BLACK STAR RISING takes Gandt's military adventure series to a new level. It has all the expected high tech gadgetry and exotic hardware, but the story is a fascinating weave of geopolitics, modern history, and stealth warfare. The ongoing hero, Brick Maxwell, has to wrestle with some private demons of his own while confronting an old arch enemy of classic proportions. In steadily increasing tempo, Gandt cranks up the tension until the multiple plot threads all come together in a final cataclysmic ending. A real page turner - you won't be able to put it down!

IBob, Just finished Black Star Rising. Excellent read! You are like fine wine... your writing and Brick's exploits improve with age. I look forward to your next effort. I am the one that mailed you my father's (Vern's) Skyhawk Watercolor print. Hope you are enjoying the print as much as I enjoyed reading your new book. All my best, Scott

Bob, Just a quick note. (I am the gentleman that sent you the Skyhawk watercolor by my father). Just finished Black Star Rising. Excellent Work! In my humble opinion your writing and Brick's exploits are like fine wine...growing ever more tasty with age. My only regret is that I am only entertained with your prose for a couple of days as once started...I must proceed to conclusion. The world gives you so much to write about. I hope my wait for number seven will not be long in coming. I hope there are no Dong-jin's stalking my Mooney. All my best, Scott
